RTD celebrates National Transit Career Day today

RTD joins the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) and transit agencies nationwide in celebrating National Transit Career Day on Thursday, Nov. 13, 2025.

This year, RTD employees connected with thousands of Denver Public Schools (DPS) students today to spark interest about careers in transit. More than a dozen staff members from operations and administration were at the district’s 8th Grade Career Fair at Empower Field at Mile High, which was expected to draw 3,500 students over two days. Employees met one-on-one with students to share what it’s like working in public transportation, and the many ways these roles support mobility across metro Denver.

“The skills and the high level of care brought by the dedicated professionals working in public transportation careers have a direct effect on the experience of the customers they serve and the economic health and vitality of the entire region,” said RTD General Manager and CEO Debra A. Johnson. “Across teams and departments agencywide, the individuals who comprise Team RTD are making a meaningful difference with every decision and interaction.”

More than 383,000 people in the United States are employed in public transportation jobs, with opportunities ranging from engineering and operations to administration and customer engagement. APTA reports more than 77% of federal transit funding flows to the private sector, which in turn creates additional jobs in contracting, construction, and professional services.

“National Transit Career Day is about building the future workforce of public transportation by connecting with people who want meaningful careers while serving their communities,” said Paul P. Skoutelas, APTA President and CEO. “Our industry blends innovation with public service, giving professionals the chance to work on projects that directly improve quality of life for millions of Americans every day.”

RTD is currently hiring for roles across the agency. For frontline positions, such as bus and rail operators, there is a $4,000 signing bonus, and do not require a commercial driver’s license to apply. Additional positions include mechanics that maintain RTD’s vehicle fleet, as well as body shop technicians who have opportunities to develop skills in painting, fabrication, and glass work. Other roles support tracks, right-of-way, and station maintenance to ensure safe and reliable service across the system.

The RTD Transit Police Department is also growing and plans to add more than 40 officers over the next year. RTD covers academy tuition for officers coming from outside departments and seeking certification. Noncertified applicants can also receive paid tuition and salary during training. Eligibility is based on other requirements including a drug test, physical agility test, and background check, among other exams.
